logoHello and Welcome to my Joomla! site. A new venture for me as I have never used a CMS before. My host here has a Fantastico Autoinstaller but the version of Joomla! is old so to get the latest I had to do a manual install and have been lucky and successful. A BIG THANK YOU to all at joomla.org for the software and the guides that have enabled me to get this far.

ubuntu logoFinally got around to installing a home server to experiment and play with. Not a huge fan of ubuntu(gnome) but it's reliable and stable and a trusted friend reckons the server edition is good so I'll give it a try. Got an old Dell Dimension XPS T700r off Freecycle and put in a 10GB hard drive and 256mb ram - also from recycled pcs. The Dell has a 700MHz CPU which is a little underpowered for ubuntu's desktop so I'll not bother with it and let the server have full use of the system resources, just a basic LAMP setup with Webmin.

How to install PHPMyAdmin on Ubuntu Server 8.04

I gave in to the temptation and installed Joomla! 1.5.5 on to my ubuntu server. I don't really need to as obviously I have a live site but the practice won't do any harm and the 10gb hard drive gives me plenty of space to play with. Doing a manual install of Joomla! requires manually inputting data into the database and running SQL queries to create the admin user and password. It is possible to do this from the MySQL Database Server module on Webmin but a simpler alternative is to use PHP Myadmin.

Server CMS Installations

I've made a start on my ubuntu home server and installed Drupal 6.3, Wordpress 2.6 and PHP-Fusion 6.01.15. They seem to be working mostly ok but it's too soon for a proper evaluation of problems. The only error I've encountered so far is in enabling the tinymce editor in PHP-Fusion. I can't get it to start, even the default editor does not seem to be showing all it's elements. I believe this is about the server rather than the install as I did it twice with the same result and I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly. Apart from that PHP-Fusion is fantastic. Drupal also appears to be very impressive. WordPress is cool but not as versatile as the other two, more for just blogging.

tuxI'm a big fan of open source software especially GNU/Linux. Most of the world's computer users only know about Microsoft Windows. Some are aware of Apple but the ridiculously high prices make it inaccessible. I suppose macs have their place in the publishing and media industries but for an ordinary everyday user like me they are an overpriced ornament.
